Trivia

The U.S.S. Housatonic was the first ship ever sunk by a submarine. The second was the H.M.S. Pathfinder, sunk by the German U-boat, U-21, in the fall of 1914. See more »

Goofs

The Hunley's torpedo was much simpler in design than it is in the movie. In the film, the sub rams the torpedo into the side of a ship, attaching the explosive to the hull. Then the sub backs away and detonates the bomb with a rope. In real life, the sub rammed the torpedo into the ship, detonating the explosive on impact. This was determined by the archaeologists in 2013, as they preserved the Hunley. See more »

Quotes

Gen. Pierre G.T. Beauregard: And what about you, Dixon? What did you lose in this war besides a good chunk of your leg? Your wife. I do not wish to be... indiscreet, but I have heard the story. She was on a ferry boat that went down in the Tennessee River - hit by a torpedo... that drifted in from God knows where. How can you bear that?
Lt. George Dixon: I read you lost your wife, sir. I'm sure it pains you to talk about that.
Gen. Pierre G.T. Beauregard: On the contrary. It helped me to get rid of the trappings of sentiment. She died... giving birth to my daughter. ...

"The Hunley" is the 2nd. greatest Civil War film, behind only "Gettysburg"
7 March 2008 | by merklekranzSee all my reviews

Like "Gettysburg", "The Hunley" , is largely factual, shows incredible bravery, and has it's touching moments. The engineering feat alone is totally amazing for 1864. Even when the North gets word of the Hunley, their defense of nets and chains is overcome by a brilliant adjustment to the method of delivering the Hunley's torpedo. Much like Jeff Daniels wonderful performance in "Gettysburg", Armand Assante is terrific as the submarine project leader. Donald Sutherland is good, but more in the shadows, as General Beauregard. This movie is not easy to watch without generating emotions driven by the crew's bravery. Highly, highly recommended. - MERK
