In this interstitial short film shown on the Turner Classic Movies (TCM) cable network, four famous film directors explain and promote the "letterbox" technique for showing wide-screen films on the more-square aspect ratio of many television screens. The letterbox format is vastly preferable to the alternative "pan-and-scan" technique, as letterboxing preserves the original artistic intent and vision of the filmmakers.
